Design Temperature

Design Temperature — Design Temperature Rating

The temperature range used as the basis for the mechanical design of equipment and pressure systems.

Definition

Design Temperature is the maximum and minimum metal temperature used when designing pressure equipment, piping systems and associated components. It is used to select suitable materials, establish allowable stresses and ensure compliance with applicable engineering codes under expected operating and upset conditions.

Why It Matters

Design Temperature ensures that equipment materials and construction remain suitable throughout the anticipated operating envelope, protecting against excessive stress, brittle fracture and thermal degradation.

In Practice

Design Temperature may include both maximum and minimum values depending on the applicable design code and service conditions, and is evaluated together with Design Pressure during mechanical design.

Common Misuse

Design Temperature defines the design operating limits used for engineering calculations and should not be confused with normal operating temperature or process temperature measurements.
