Design Pressure

Design Pressure — Design Pressure Rating

The pressure used as the basis for the mechanical design of equipment and pressure systems.

Definition

Design Pressure is the pressure selected for the design of pressure-retaining equipment, piping systems and vessels to ensure safe operation under the most severe expected operating conditions. It forms the basis for equipment sizing, material selection, code compliance and mechanical integrity assessments.

Why It Matters

The Design Pressure establishes the engineering limits used to safely design pressure-containing equipment and supports compliance with applicable pressure vessel and piping codes.

In Practice

Design Pressure normally exceeds the maximum expected operating pressure to provide an appropriate engineering margin in accordance with applicable design codes and company standards.

Common Misuse

Design Pressure is a design parameter established during engineering and should not be confused with Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP), which represents the maximum permissible operating pressure for completed equipment.
