API 510 — Pressure Vessel Inspection Standard

An API inspection code that establishes requirements for the inspection, repair, alteration and rerating of in-service pressure vessels.

Definition

API 510 is an American Petroleum Institute inspection code that defines the minimum requirements for inspecting, repairing, altering and rerating pressure vessels used in the petroleum, petrochemical and related process industries. The standard establishes inspection intervals, inspector qualifications, assessment methods and documentation requirements to ensure continued mechanical integrity throughout a vessel's service life.

API 510 provides a recognized framework for maintaining the integrity and safe operation of pressure vessels while supporting regulatory compliance and risk-based inspection programs.

In Practice

API 510 is commonly used alongside API RP 572 for inspection practices, API RP 580/581 for Risk-Based Inspection and API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 when evaluating equipment fitness-for-service.

Common Misuse

API 510 specifies inspection and integrity management requirements for vessels already in service and should not be confused with ASME BPVC Section VIII, which governs pressure vessel design and construction.
