API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 is a jointly published American Petroleum Institute and American Society of Mechanical Engineers standard that provides internationally recognized engineering assessment procedures for determining the structural integrity and continued serviceability of pressure equipment containing flaws or damage. The standard covers a wide range of damage mechanisms, assessment levels and engineering calculations used to determine whether equipment is fit for continued service, requires repair or should be retired.
The standard enables owner/operators to make technically justified decisions regarding continued operation, repair or replacement while maintaining safety, reliability and regulatory compliance.
API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 is widely used with API 510, API 570, API 653 and API RP 580/581 as part of comprehensive mechanical integrity and Risk-Based Inspection programs.
This joint publication defines formal Fitness-for-Service assessment procedures and should not be confused with the broader Fitness-for-Service engineering discipline.
