An API inspection code that establishes requirements for the inspection, repair, alteration and reconstruction of aboveground storage tanks.
API 653 is an American Petroleum Institute inspection code that defines the minimum requirements for inspecting, repairing, altering and reconstructing aboveground welded storage tanks used in the petroleum and petrochemical industries. The code establishes inspection intervals, evaluation methods, repair requirements, inspector qualifications and documentation needed to maintain tank integrity throughout its operational life.
API 653 provides a standardized framework for maintaining the safety, reliability and continued serviceability of aboveground storage tanks while supporting regulatory compliance and integrity management.
API 653 is commonly used alongside API RP 575, API RP 580/581 and API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 where engineering assessment of tank damage is required.
API 653 applies to aboveground welded storage tanks in service and complements, rather than replaces, design standards such as API 650.
