Defect Assessment

The engineering evaluation of identified defects to determine their significance, remaining life and appropriate corrective actions.

Definition

Defect Assessment is the systematic evaluation of flaws, damage or degradation identified during inspection to determine whether equipment remains fit for continued service. Assessments consider defect size, location, operating conditions, applicable codes, material properties and degradation mechanisms to determine repair, monitoring or replacement requirements.

Why It Matters

Defect Assessment enables informed engineering decisions that balance safety, reliability, regulatory compliance and operational continuity while avoiding unnecessary equipment replacement.

In Practice

Defect Assessments frequently apply engineering methodologies defined in standards such as API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 and consider factors including corrosion, cracking, creep, fatigue and other degradation mechanisms.

Common Misuse

Defect Assessment evaluates the significance of identified damage. It differs from inspection, which detects and records defects, and from repair procedures, which define how defects are corrected.
