API RP 571 — Damage Mechanisms Affecting Fixed Equipment

A recommended practice that identifies and describes the damage mechanisms affecting fixed equipment in refining and process facilities.

Definition

API RP 571 is an American Petroleum Institute Recommended Practice that provides comprehensive guidance on the damage mechanisms that affect pressure vessels, piping, tanks and other fixed equipment operating in refining and petrochemical facilities. It describes the causes, appearance, operating conditions, inspection methods and mitigation strategies associated with corrosion, cracking, metallurgical degradation and other deterioration mechanisms.

Why It Matters

API RP 571 provides the technical foundation for identifying degradation mechanisms, selecting appropriate inspection techniques and developing effective mechanical integrity and Risk-Based Inspection programs.

In Practice

API RP 571 is frequently used together with API 510, API 570, API RP 572, API RP 574 and API RP 580/581 to establish inspection programs based on expected degradation mechanisms.
