FFS — Fitness For Service

The engineering assessment of equipment to determine whether it is safe and suitable to continue operating despite identified damage or defects.

Definition

Fitness-for-Service (FFS) is the engineering evaluation of in-service equipment containing flaws, damage or degradation to determine whether it remains safe, reliable and suitable for continued operation under specified operating conditions. FFS assessments evaluate the significance of defects using engineering analysis, inspection data, material properties and applicable industry standards to determine whether equipment may continue operating, requires repair, derating or replacement.

Why It Matters

FFS assessments enable safe, risk-informed decisions regarding continued operation while avoiding unnecessary equipment replacement and supporting effective asset lifecycle management.

In Practice

FFS assessments commonly evaluate corrosion, cracks, dents, distortion, creep damage and other degradation mechanisms using recognized engineering procedures such as API 579-1/ASME FFS-1.

Common Misuse

Fitness-for-Service is the engineering discipline and assessment process, whereas API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 is the principal industry standard describing how those assessments are performed.
