MI — Mechanical Integrity

The ability of equipment to safely and reliably perform its intended function throughout its service life.

Definition

Mechanical Integrity (MI) is the condition in which equipment, piping, pressure systems and other critical assets are designed, constructed, operated, inspected and maintained so they continue to perform their intended function safely and reliably throughout their service life. Mechanical Integrity is a fundamental element of process safety and asset integrity management.

Why It Matters

Mechanical Integrity ensures that critical equipment remains fit for service throughout its operational lifecycle.

In Practice

Mechanical Integrity is achieved through engineering design, inspection, maintenance, testing, fitness-for-service assessments and effective management systems that control equipment degradation and failure mechanisms.

Common Misuse

Mechanical Integrity describes the condition and continued fitness of physical assets, whereas a Mechanical Integrity Management System defines the processes used to achieve and maintain that integrity.
