FEED — Front End Engineering Design

The engineering phase in which project scope, technical solutions and execution strategies are sufficiently developed to support investment decisions and detailed design.

Definition

Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) is the project development phase that converts conceptual designs into a sufficiently defined engineering package to support cost estimation, schedule development, risk assessment and final investment decisions. FEED typically includes process design, equipment selection, plot plans, major specifications, preliminary engineering documents and execution planning.

Why It Matters

FEED reduces project risk by establishing a well-defined technical basis before detailed engineering and procurement commence.

In Practice

A typical FEED package includes process flow diagrams, preliminary P&IDs, equipment specifications, layout drawings, design basis documents and capital cost estimates with defined accuracy ranges.

Common Misuse

FEED is performed after conceptual engineering and before detailed engineering, providing the technical foundation for Approved for Design and Approved for Construction deliverables.
