AFC — Approved for Construction

The formal approval status indicating that engineering deliverables are authorized for construction or installation.

Definition

Approved for Construction (AFC) is the document or model status indicating that an engineering deliverable has completed the required technical reviews and approvals and may be used for procurement, fabrication, construction or installation activities.

Why It Matters

AFC documents provide confidence that engineering information is sufficiently complete and approved to support field execution, reducing rework and construction risk.

In Practice

AFC represents one stage within the engineering document lifecycle and normally follows Approved for Design while preceding As-Built documentation.

Common Misuse

AFC does not necessarily mean the design can never change. Engineering changes may still occur through formal Management of Change or revision control processes.
