The formal approval status indicating that an engineering design has been technically accepted but is not yet authorized for construction.
Approved for Design (AFD) indicates that an engineering deliverable has completed design review and is considered technically acceptable for design purposes, although additional work or approvals may still be required before construction authorization is granted.
AFD establishes a controlled design baseline that supports interdisciplinary coordination, design verification and client review before construction documents are released.
AFD normally precedes Approved for Construction and provides the controlled engineering baseline from which construction deliverables are developed.
Organizations may use different document status codes, but the principle remains the same: the design is approved for engineering purposes, not necessarily for construction.
