As-Built — As Built Documentation

Engineering documentation that accurately reflects the final installed configuration of a facility, system or asset following construction, commissioning and approved modifications.

Definition

As Built Documentation comprises the complete set of engineering drawings, models, specifications, vendor documentation and supporting records that have been updated to reflect the actual configuration of the completed facility. It incorporates all approved construction changes, field modifications and commissioning updates to provide an accurate record of the asset as it exists in operation.

Why It Matters

Accurate As Built Documentation is essential for safe operations, maintenance, future modifications, regulatory compliance and digital asset management. Poor or outdated documentation increases operational risk, maintenance costs and engineering effort throughout the asset lifecycle.

In Practice

As Built Documentation represents the final verified engineering baseline following construction. It is typically produced from Approved for Construction documents combined with approved field changes, redlines and commissioning updates before becoming the authoritative engineering record.

Common Misuse

As Built Documentation should not be confused with construction markups or redline drawings. Redlines record proposed or observed field changes, while As Built Documentation incorporates only approved changes into the permanent engineering record.
