LOPC — Loss of Primary Containment

The unintended release of hazardous material from equipment designed to contain it.

Definition

Loss of Primary Containment (LoPC) is the unintended release of hazardous liquids, gases or vapors from process equipment or piping that is intended to contain them. LoPC events may result from corrosion, mechanical failure, human error, overpressure or external damage and are a primary focus of process safety and asset integrity management programs.

Why It Matters

Loss of Primary Containment is a key process safety event used to assess asset integrity and manage major accident hazards.

In Practice

Many organizations classify LoPC events according to their severity and reporting criteria to support incident investigation, regulatory compliance and continuous improvement of process safety performance.

Common Misuse

Loss of Primary Containment describes the release of hazardous material from containment, whereas Likelihood of Failure estimates the probability of failures that could lead to such an event.
