COR — Corrosion Rate

The rate at which material thickness is lost due to corrosion over a specified period of time.

Definition

Corrosion Rate is the measured or calculated rate of material loss resulting from corrosion processes, typically expressed as millimetres per year (mm/y), mils per year (mpy) or similar engineering units. It is a key parameter used to estimate remaining life, establish inspection intervals and assess equipment integrity.

Why It Matters

Accurate corrosion rate calculations support integrity management, inspection planning and remaining life assessments while helping optimize maintenance and replacement decisions.

In Practice

Corrosion rates may be determined from repeated thickness measurements, corrosion coupons, online monitoring systems or predictive engineering assessments, and may vary significantly depending on operating conditions and damage mechanisms.

Common Misuse

Corrosion Rate describes the speed of material degradation, whereas Corrosion Allowance represents the design margin provided to accommodate that expected material loss.
