Corrosion Allowance — Corrosion Allowance Thickness

The additional material thickness included in equipment design to compensate for anticipated corrosion during the intended service life.

Definition

Corrosion Allowance is the additional wall thickness intentionally added to pressure-retaining equipment during design to compensate for expected material loss caused by corrosion, erosion or other degradation mechanisms over the planned operating life of the asset. The allowance helps ensure that the equipment remains above its minimum required thickness until the next major inspection or the end of its design life.

Corrosion Allowance provides a safety margin that extends equipment service life while supporting safe operation, inspection planning and integrity management.

In Practice

The required corrosion allowance depends on the anticipated corrosion mechanism, corrosion rate, inspection strategy, design life and applicable design codes such as API and ASME standards.

Corrosion Allowance is additional thickness provided during design. It differs from Minimum Required Thickness, which defines the minimum acceptable thickness required for continued safe operation.
