TML — Thickness Measurement Location

A designated location on an asset where wall thickness measurements are routinely performed to monitor degradation over time.

Definition

A Thickness Measurement Location (TML) is a predefined location on piping, pressure equipment or other assets where wall thickness measurements are periodically obtained to monitor corrosion, erosion or other degradation mechanisms. TMLs provide consistent measurement locations that enable reliable trend analysis, remaining life assessment and integrity management throughout the asset lifecycle.

Thickness Measurement Locations provide consistent reference points for monitoring wall loss and assessing asset integrity over time.

In Practice

TMLs are established during inspection planning and are selected based on expected degradation mechanisms, critical operating conditions and engineering judgement to maximize the effectiveness of integrity monitoring.
