ASME — American Society of Mechanical Engineers

A global professional organization that develops internationally recognized engineering codes and standards for mechanical systems and pressure equipment.

Definition

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is an international professional organization that develops engineering codes, standards and technical guidance covering pressure equipment, piping systems, boilers, mechanical components and numerous other engineering disciplines. ASME publications are widely adopted throughout the process, power, manufacturing and energy industries and are frequently referenced by legislation, regulators and owner/operator specifications.

Why It Matters

ASME standards establish internationally recognized engineering requirements that promote safety, reliability, consistency and interoperability across industrial facilities and equipment.

In Practice

ASME standards are commonly used alongside API, ISO, ASTM and other international standards. Many API standards reference or complement ASME publications for design, construction and integrity assessment.

Common Misuse

ASME is the standards development organization. Individual ASME codes and standards, such as the BPVC and B31 series, contain the detailed technical requirements.
