ASME B31.1 — Power Piping Code

An ASME piping code that establishes requirements for the design, construction, inspection and testing of power piping systems.

Definition

ASME B31.1 is part of the ASME B31 Code for Pressure Piping and provides requirements governing the design, materials, fabrication, assembly, examination, inspection, testing, operation and maintenance of power piping systems associated with electric power generating stations, industrial plants, district heating systems and central heating installations.

Why It Matters

It provides a standardized engineering framework that promotes the safe and reliable design, construction and operation of power piping systems operating under elevated temperatures and pressures.

In Practice

ASME B31.1 is primarily applied to power generation and utility piping systems and complements ASME BPVC requirements for boilers and pressure-retaining equipment.

Common Misuse

ASME B31.1 applies primarily to power piping systems and should not be confused with ASME B31.3, which governs process piping in industrial facilities.
