ASME Section I

ASME Section I — Power Boilers Code Section

The section of the ASME BPVC that establishes requirements for the design and construction of power boilers.

Definition

ASME BPVC Section I specifies engineering requirements for the design, materials, fabrication, inspection, testing and certification of power boilers that generate steam or other vapor under pressure. The section defines the construction rules necessary to ensure the safe manufacture and operation of boilers used in power generation and industrial applications.

Why It Matters

It establishes internationally recognized engineering requirements that promote the safe construction and operation of high-pressure power boilers.

In Practice

Section I is one component of the broader ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and is frequently used together with ASME B31.1 for associated boiler piping systems.

Common Misuse

Section I applies to the construction of new power boilers and should not be confused with inspection codes governing equipment already in service.
