ASME B31.3 — Process Piping Code

An ASME piping code that establishes requirements for the design, construction, inspection and testing of process piping systems.

Definition

ASME B31.3 is part of the ASME B31 Code for Pressure Piping and establishes engineering requirements for the design, materials, fabrication, assembly, examination, inspection, testing and maintenance of piping systems used in petroleum refineries, petrochemical plants, chemical processing facilities and other industrial process plants.

Why It Matters

It provides the principal engineering standard used worldwide for the safe design and construction of industrial process piping systems.

In Practice

ASME B31.3 is one of the most widely adopted piping design codes in the process industries and is frequently referenced alongside API inspection standards such as API 570.

Common Misuse

ASME B31.3 governs piping design and construction, whereas API 570 governs the inspection and integrity management of piping once it has been placed into service.
