Work Request

A formal request identifying the need for maintenance, inspection or engineering work.

Definition

A Work Request is a formal request submitted to identify the need for maintenance, inspection, repair, modification or other engineering work. Work Requests typically describe the observed issue, required action or operational concern and provide the information necessary for evaluation, prioritization and, where appropriate, the creation of a Work Order.

Why It Matters

Work Requests identify maintenance and engineering needs before work is evaluated, prioritized and authorized.

In Practice

Work Requests may originate from operations, maintenance, inspections, condition monitoring or engineering personnel and provide the starting point for the maintenance work management process.

Common Misuse

A Work Request identifies the need for work, whereas a Work Order authorizes, plans and manages the execution of the approved work.
