WO — Work Order

A controlled document authorizing and managing the execution of maintenance, inspection or engineering work.

Definition

A Work Order (WO) is a controlled document used to authorize, plan, schedule, execute and record maintenance, inspection, repair or engineering activities relating to physical assets. Work Orders define the required work, assigned resources, materials, priorities and completion requirements while providing traceability throughout the work management process.

Why It Matters

Work Orders authorize, manage and record maintenance and engineering work throughout its execution.

In Practice

Work Orders are typically generated from maintenance plans, inspection findings, Repair Recommendations or Work Requests and provide the primary mechanism for planning, executing and recording maintenance activities.

Common Misuse

A Work Order authorizes and manages the execution of maintenance activities, whereas a Work Request identifies the need for work without authorizing its execution.
