PdM — Predictive Maintenance

A maintenance approach that uses condition data and analytical techniques to predict equipment failures before they occur.

Definition

Predictive Maintenance (PdM) is a maintenance strategy that uses condition monitoring, operational data, engineering analysis and predictive algorithms to estimate when equipment is likely to fail so that maintenance can be performed before functional failure occurs. It enables maintenance activities to be planned based on predicted asset condition rather than fixed schedules.

Why It Matters

Predictive Maintenance uses data-driven analysis to forecast equipment failures and optimize maintenance activities.

In Practice

Predictive Maintenance commonly incorporates condition monitoring technologies such as vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, ultrasonic testing and machine learning to improve maintenance planning and asset reliability.

Common Misuse

Predictive Maintenance forecasts future equipment failures using analytical models, whereas Condition-Based Maintenance initiates maintenance based on the current measured condition of the asset.
