MTBF — Mean Time Between Failures

The average operating time between successive failures of a repairable asset or system.

Definition

Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) is a reliability metric that represents the average operating time between successive failures of a repairable asset, system or component. It is commonly used to assess reliability, compare equipment performance and support maintenance planning by measuring the expected time that equipment operates before experiencing a failure.

Why It Matters

Mean Time Between Failures provides a quantitative measure of equipment reliability based on historical operating performance.

In Practice

MTBF is calculated using operating time and recorded failures for repairable assets. It is most meaningful when equipment operates under relatively consistent service conditions and sufficient historical data is available.

Common Misuse

Mean Time Between Failures measures the expected operating time before failure, whereas Mean Time to Repair measures the time required to restore equipment after a failure.
