MTTR — Mean Time To Repair

The average time required to restore a failed asset or system to normal operating condition.

Definition

Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) is a maintainability metric that represents the average time required to diagnose, repair, test and return a failed asset, system or component to normal operation. It is widely used to evaluate maintenance effectiveness, equipment availability and the efficiency of maintenance processes.

Why It Matters

Mean Time to Repair measures the average duration required to restore failed equipment to operational service.

In Practice

MTTR may include fault diagnosis, repair, component replacement, testing and recommissioning activities, depending on the organization's measurement methodology.

Common Misuse

Mean Time to Repair measures the time required to restore equipment following failure, whereas Mean Time Between Failures measures the expected operating time between failures.
