UT — Ultrasonic Testing

A non-destructive testing method that uses high-frequency sound waves to examine materials and detect internal or surface discontinuities.

Definition

Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method that uses high-frequency sound waves to detect, characterize and measure internal or surface discontinuities, determine material thickness and evaluate the integrity of engineering components without causing damage. Ultrasonic Testing is widely used for weld inspection, corrosion monitoring and fitness-for-service assessments across a broad range of industrial applications.

In Practice

Ultrasonic Testing is widely applied for weld examination, wall thickness measurement, corrosion monitoring and flaw detection and includes a range of techniques such as conventional UT, phased array UT (PAUT) and time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD).

Ultrasonic Testing is the inspection method used to evaluate material integrity, whereas Thickness Monitoring is the ongoing process that uses repeated thickness measurements to assess degradation over time.
