NDT

NDT — Non Destructive Testing

A group of inspection methods used to evaluate materials or components without causing damage.

Definition

Nondestructive Testing (NDT) is the discipline of inspecting materials, components or equipment using methods that do not impair their future usefulness. NDT techniques are used to detect, characterize and evaluate discontinuities, degradation and other conditions affecting quality, integrity and reliability without damaging the item being examined.

Why It Matters

Nondestructive Testing enables the inspection of assets without impairing their continued serviceability.

In Practice

Common NDT methods include ultrasonic testing (UT), radiographic testing (RT), magnetic particle testing (MT), liquid penetrant testing (PT), eddy current testing (ET) and visual testing (VT).

Common Misuse

Nondestructive Testing refers to the inspection methods themselves, whereas Nondestructive Examination emphasizes their application to evaluate the condition or integrity of a specific component or asset.
