Trip Setpoint

The predetermined value at which a protective system initiates an automatic shutdown or protective action.

Definition

A Trip Setpoint is the predetermined process value at which a Safety Instrumented Function, protective device or other automated protection system initiates a shutdown or protective action to prevent hazardous conditions or equipment damage. Trip Setpoints are established through engineering analysis, risk assessment and process safety requirements to achieve the required level of protection.

Why It Matters

Trip Setpoints define the conditions under which automated protection systems initiate shutdown or other protective actions.

In Practice

Trip Setpoints are configured within Safety Instrumented Systems, emergency shutdown systems and other protective functions to maintain process safety and equipment integrity under abnormal operating conditions.

Common Misuse

A Trip Setpoint initiates a protective action when predefined limits are exceeded, whereas a Setpoint defines the normal target operating value for a control or protection function.
