SIS — Safety Instrumented System

An independent protection system that implements one or more Safety Instrumented Functions to reduce process risk.

Definition

A Safety Instrumented System (SIS) is an independent engineered protection system that implements one or more Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs) to detect hazardous process conditions and automatically place the process into a safe state. An SIS operates independently of the basic process control system to reduce the likelihood and consequences of hazardous events.

Why It Matters

Safety Instrumented Systems provide independent automated protection against hazardous process conditions.

In Practice

Safety Instrumented Systems are designed, implemented, operated and maintained in accordance with functional safety standards such as IEC 61511 and IEC 61508 to achieve specified Safety Integrity Levels.

Common Misuse

A Safety Instrumented System implements one or more Safety Instrumented Functions, whereas a Basic Process Control System is primarily intended to control normal process operation.
