SIF — Safety Instrumented Function

A specific safety function implemented to detect hazardous conditions and place a process into a safe state when required.

Definition

A Safety Instrumented Function (SIF) is a defined safety function designed to detect specified hazardous conditions and automatically place a process into a predetermined safe state when required. A SIF comprises sensors, logic solvers and final control elements that collectively reduce the risk associated with identified process hazards to an acceptable level.

Why It Matters

Safety Instrumented Functions automatically respond to hazardous conditions to reduce process risk and achieve defined safety objectives.

In Practice

Safety Instrumented Functions are specified according to required Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) and implemented within Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) in accordance with functional safety standards such as IEC 61511 and IEC 61508.

Common Misuse

A Safety Instrumented Function performs a specific protective action, whereas a Safety Instrumented System comprises one or more Safety Instrumented Functions.
