ISA — International Society of Automation

The international organization responsible for developing standards and best practices for industrial automation and control systems.

Definition

The International Society of Automation (ISA) is an international professional organization that develops standards, technical guidance and best practices for industrial automation, instrumentation, process control and cybersecurity. ISA standards are widely adopted throughout the process industries and have significantly influenced modern industrial automation and functional safety practices.

In Practice

Well-known ISA standards include ISA-18.2 (Alarm Management), ISA-84 (Functional Safety), ISA-95 (Enterprise-Control System Integration) and ISA-99 (Industrial Cybersecurity).

Common Misuse

The ISA develops standards for industrial automation and control systems, whereas the OPC Foundation develops interoperability standards for industrial communication.
