PCS — Process Control System

An integrated system used to monitor, control and automate industrial processes.

Definition

A Process Control System (PCS) is an integrated combination of hardware, software, instrumentation and communication networks used to monitor, control and automate industrial processes. Process Control Systems maintain process variables within defined operating limits to support safe, reliable and efficient plant operation.

Process Control Systems provide automated monitoring and control of industrial processes to ensure safe and reliable operation.

In Practice

A PCS typically integrates field instrumentation, controllers, operator workstations, communication networks and supervisory software, and may interface with historians, Plant Information Management Systems and enterprise applications.

Common Misuse

A Process Control System controls and monitors industrial processes, whereas a Plant Information Management System primarily collects, stores and analyzes operational information.
