PWHT — Post Weld Heat Treatment

A controlled heat treatment process performed after welding to reduce residual stresses and improve material properties.

Definition

Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) is a controlled heating and cooling process applied after welding to reduce residual stresses, improve material toughness and restore desired metallurgical properties. PWHT may also reduce hardness and improve resistance to brittle fracture, stress corrosion cracking and other service-related damage mechanisms.

Why It Matters

Post-Weld Heat Treatment improves the long-term integrity and performance of welded components through controlled thermal treatment.

In Practice

PWHT requirements are specified by applicable design codes, material specifications and engineering assessments, with treatment temperatures and holding times determined according to the material and service conditions.

Common Misuse

Post-Weld Heat Treatment modifies the metallurgical properties of welded components after fabrication, whereas welding procedures define how the weld itself is produced.
