NDE — Nondestructive Examination

The application of nondestructive testing methods to evaluate the condition, integrity or fitness for service of an asset or component.

Definition

Nondestructive Examination (NDE) is the application of nondestructive testing methods to assess the condition, integrity or fitness for service of materials, components or equipment. NDE combines appropriate inspection techniques with engineering evaluation to support decisions relating to quality, continued operation, maintenance and asset integrity.

Why It Matters

Nondestructive Examination applies nondestructive testing methods to support engineering assessment and integrity management.

In Practice

NDE is commonly associated with in-service inspection, fitness-for-service assessments and integrity management programs where inspection results are interpreted to support engineering decisions.

Common Misuse

Nondestructive Examination applies inspection methods to evaluate equipment condition and integrity, whereas Nondestructive Testing refers more broadly to the inspection techniques themselves.
