ISO — Isometric Drawing

An engineering drawing that represents piping or equipment in a three-dimensional isometric projection while preserving engineering dimensions and connectivity.

Definition

An Isometric Drawing is a detailed engineering document that depicts piping systems using an isometric projection to clearly illustrate routing, dimensions, welds, fittings, valves, supports and equipment connections. Unlike perspective drawings, isometric drawings maintain scale relationships for engineering purposes and are widely used for fabrication, construction, inspection and maintenance.

Why It Matters

Isometric Drawings provide the detailed fabrication and construction information required to manufacture, install and maintain piping systems.

In Practice

Isometric Drawings are typically generated from piping design models and include dimensions, material specifications, weld identifiers, line numbers and bill of materials information.

An Isometric Drawing is a piping engineering document and should not be confused with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), despite the common industry abbreviation "ISO" for piping isometrics.
