BOM — Bill of Materials

A structured list of the materials, components and assemblies required to manufacture, construct or maintain an asset.

Definition

A Bill of Materials (BOM) is a structured inventory of all components, materials, spare parts and assemblies required to build, install, maintain or repair an asset or system. A BOM typically identifies each item by part number, description, quantity and other engineering or procurement attributes, providing the foundation for purchasing, inventory management and maintenance planning.

Why It Matters

A well-maintained BOM improves maintenance efficiency, supports spare parts management, reduces procurement errors and helps ensure the correct components are available when required.

In Practice

BOMs are commonly integrated with Enterprise Asset Management (EAM), Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems to support maintenance and supply chain operations.

Common Misuse

A Bill of Materials defines the components that make up an asset and should not be confused with a Material Takeoff, which estimates project quantities for construction or fabrication.
