LOOP

Loop — Instrument Loop

A complete measurement, control or safety circuit comprising field instruments, signal transmission, control logic and final control elements that together perform a defined process function.

Definition

An Instrument Loop is the complete functional circuit that begins with a process variable or operator input, passes through field instrumentation, signal transmission, controllers, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control systems (DCS), safety instrumented systems (SIS) or other control logic, and terminates at one or more final control elements such as control valves, motors, alarms or shutdown devices. Each loop performs a specific measurement, monitoring, control or protective function and is assigned a unique loop identifier to support engineering design, commissioning, testing, maintenance and lifecycle management. Instrument Loops are documented using loop diagrams, verified through loop checks and maintained throughout the life of the facility to ensure reliable operation of automation and safety systems.

Why It Matters

Instrument Loops form the fundamental functional building blocks of industrial automation systems, providing the traceable connection between field instrumentation, control systems and final control devices.

In Practice

Instrument Loops are documented using loop diagrams, tested during loop checks and maintained throughout the asset lifecycle to ensure reliable operation of process control, monitoring and safety functions.

Common Misuse

An Instrument Loop represents the complete functional control circuit, whereas a Loop Diagram is the engineering document used to describe and document that circuit.
