DCS — Distributed Control System

A computerized control system that monitors and controls industrial processes using distributed controllers connected through a communications network.

Definition

A Distributed Control System (DCS) is an integrated process automation system consisting of distributed controllers, operator workstations, engineering stations, communication networks and input/output devices. A DCS provides continuous monitoring, supervisory control, alarm management, historical data collection and process optimization for industrial facilities.

Why It Matters

A DCS forms the core automation platform for continuous process industries, enabling safe, reliable and efficient plant operation through centralized supervision and distributed control.

In Practice

Modern DCS platforms integrate with historians, alarm management systems, safety systems, asset management platforms and advanced process control applications while maintaining high system availability and redundancy.

Common Misuse

A DCS primarily controls continuous industrial processes. It differs from a Safety Instrumented System (SIS), which performs independent protective functions, although the two systems are frequently integrated.
