The primary control system used to monitor and control normal industrial process operations.
A Basic Process Control System (BPCS) is the primary automation system responsible for controlling and monitoring normal plant operations. It acquires process measurements, executes control strategies, operates control loops and provides operator interfaces that maintain equipment and processes within normal operating limits.
The BPCS forms the foundation of industrial process automation by maintaining stable, efficient and reliable plant operation under normal operating conditions.
A BPCS typically integrates with Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), while remaining functionally separate from independent safety protection layers.
The BPCS controls normal process operation, whereas a Safety Instrumented System (SIS) provides independent protection when hazardous conditions occur.
