ESD

ESD — Emergency Shutdown

A protective action that safely shuts down equipment or processes when hazardous conditions are detected.

Definition

Emergency Shutdown (ESD) is the automatic or manually initiated shutdown of equipment, systems or entire process units to place the plant in a predefined safe state following the detection of unsafe operating conditions. ESD systems are designed to minimize the consequences of hazardous events and protect personnel, equipment and the environment.

Why It Matters

ESD is a fundamental layer of protection within process safety and is typically implemented using dedicated safety instrumented systems and predefined shutdown logic.

In Practice

An Emergency Shutdown may be initiated automatically by safety instrumented functions or manually by operators using emergency shutdown stations depending on the design and operating philosophy.

Common Misuse

An Emergency Shutdown is the protective action itself, while an Emergency Shutdown System refers to the hardware and software used to perform that action.
