I/O — Input Output

The physical or logical interface through which control systems receive signals from field devices and send commands to equipment.

Definition

Input/Output (I/O) represents the interfaces that allow control systems such as PLCs, DCSs and safety systems to communicate with field instruments and equipment. Inputs receive measurements, status signals and operator commands, while outputs transmit control signals to valves, motors, alarms and other actuators.

Why It Matters

I/O forms the communication layer between field devices and industrial control systems, enabling monitoring, automation and process control.

In Practice

I/O may be analog or digital and is organized into input and output modules that interface with field wiring and control system hardware.

Common Misuse

Input/Output refers to the communication interface itself, whereas an I/O List is the engineering document that defines and records every I/O point within a control system.
