A predefined physical location on an asset where inspections, nondestructive examinations or condition measurements are repeatedly performed to assess equipment condition and monitor degradation.
An Inspection Point is a predefined physical location on an item of equipment where inspections, visual examinations, nondestructive testing or condition measurements are intentionally performed throughout the operational life of the asset. Inspection Points are established during inspection planning to provide repeatable locations for assessing known or anticipated degradation mechanisms such as corrosion, erosion, fatigue, cracking, wear or mechanical damage. By returning to the same locations during successive inspection intervals, engineers can accurately trend deterioration rates, evaluate remaining life, validate inspection effectiveness and optimize future inspection frequencies. Inspection Points may be permanently marked on equipment, referenced by coordinates or dimensions, or identified on engineering drawings, digital models and inspection plans. They form the foundation of systematic inspection programs by ensuring that inspection results remain consistent, comparable and technically meaningful over time.
Inspection Points provide consistent, repeatable locations for monitoring equipment condition, enabling meaningful trend analysis, reliable engineering assessments and risk-informed inspection planning throughout the asset lifecycle.
Inspection Points are established during inspection planning and are often permanently identified to ensure repeat inspections are performed at identical locations, enabling accurate comparison of historical measurements and degradation trends.
An Inspection Point is a general location for inspection activities, whereas a Thickness Measurement Location (TML) is a specific Inspection Point dedicated to repeatable wall thickness monitoring.
