CMTR — Certified Material Test Report

A certified document providing the chemical composition, mechanical properties and inspection results for a manufactured material.

Definition

A Certified Material Test Report (CMTR) is a quality document issued by the material manufacturer that certifies the chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment, testing results and traceability information for a specific material batch or heat. The report demonstrates compliance with applicable material specifications and provides documented evidence supporting material acceptance and traceability.

Why It Matters

CMTRs provide assurance that construction materials meet engineering specifications and support quality control, inspection, regulatory compliance and lifecycle traceability.

In Practice

CMTRs are commonly required for pressure-retaining equipment, piping systems and critical structural components and form part of permanent manufacturing and quality records.

Common Misuse

CMTR generally refers to a certified material report issued by the manufacturer, whereas Material Test Report (MTR) may be used more broadly depending on company practice and applicable standards.
