A qualified engineering document defining the approved welding process, parameters and requirements for producing acceptable welds.
A Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is a controlled engineering document that defines the welding process, materials, joint design, consumables, welding parameters and essential variables required to produce welds that satisfy specified quality and code requirements. A qualified WPS provides standardized instructions for achieving consistent weld quality during fabrication and repair.
Welding Procedure Specifications define the approved welding methods required to consistently produce acceptable welds.
Welding Procedure Specifications are qualified through Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs) and are prepared in accordance with applicable welding codes and standards such as ASME Section IX and AWS welding specifications.
A Welding Procedure Specification defines how welding is to be performed, whereas a Procedure Qualification Record provides the evidence that the welding procedure has been successfully qualified.
