Backlog

The accumulated maintenance or work requests that have been approved but not yet completed.

Definition

In maintenance and asset management, Backlog represents the total volume of approved work orders, maintenance activities or engineering tasks awaiting execution. Backlog may be measured in labor hours, estimated cost, number of work orders or elapsed time and is commonly used to assess workload, resource utilization and maintenance performance.

Why It Matters

Monitoring Backlog helps organizations balance available resources, prioritize work, identify maintenance risks and optimize planning and scheduling activities.

In Practice

A healthy maintenance backlog reflects an appropriate balance between preventive, corrective and improvement work. Excessive backlog can increase operational risk, while an unusually low backlog may indicate under-planning or insufficient preventive maintenance.

Common Misuse

Backlog refers to approved work awaiting execution and should not be confused with unapproved maintenance requests or operational defects that have not yet entered the work management process.
