TAR — Turnaround

A planned major maintenance event during which a facility or process unit is taken out of service to perform inspections, repairs, modifications and upgrades.

Definition

A Turnaround (TAR) is a planned shutdown of a facility or process unit to perform major inspection, maintenance, repair, replacement and modification activities that cannot safely or economically be completed while the facility remains in operation. Turnarounds are carefully planned to restore asset integrity, improve reliability and support continued safe operation.

Why It Matters

Turnarounds provide planned opportunities to perform major maintenance, inspection and asset improvement activities.

In Practice

Turnarounds typically involve extensive planning, scheduling, resource coordination, procurement and safety management to minimize production downtime while completing all required work safely and efficiently.

Common Misuse

A Turnaround is a planned major maintenance event, whereas a Shutdown refers more generally to the operational cessation of production and may be planned or unplanned.
