Asset Tag

A unique identifier assigned to a physical asset to enable consistent identification throughout its lifecycle.

Definition

An Asset Tag is the unique alphanumeric identifier assigned to a physical asset for engineering, operational, maintenance and information management purposes. The Asset Tag provides the primary reference used to identify an asset consistently across drawings, engineering documents, maintenance systems, inspection records, Digital Twins and enterprise information systems.

Why It Matters

Consistent Asset Tagging enables reliable asset identification, improves data quality, supports system integration and ensures traceability across the complete asset lifecycle.

In Practice

Asset Tags are fundamental to Asset Information Management and provide the common identifier linking engineering documentation, operational systems and maintenance records. Well-defined tagging standards are essential for successful digital transformation initiatives.

Common Misuse

An Asset Tag identifies the physical asset itself and should remain stable throughout the asset's lifecycle. Changes to equipment location, ownership or maintenance strategy should not normally require changes to the Asset Tag.
