Tag Number

The unique alphanumeric value assigned to a Tag to identify a physical asset, engineering object, digital object or other identifiable entity.

Definition

A Tag Number is the unique alphanumeric value assigned to a Tag to distinguish a physical asset, engineering object, digital object or other identifiable entity from all others within a project, facility or information system. Tag Numbers provide the common reference used throughout engineering documentation, drawings, digital models, operations, maintenance and enterprise information systems to consistently identify and relate engineering information.

Why It Matters

Tag Numbers provide the unique values used to identify and reference Tags consistently throughout the asset lifecycle.

In Practice

Tag Numbers are assigned in accordance with established Tagging Specifications and are consistently applied across engineering drawings, 3D models, asset registers, maintenance systems, control systems and enterprise information systems to maintain traceability and information consistency.

Common Misuse

A Tag Number is the specific alphanumeric value assigned to a Tag, whereas a Tag is the broader engineering concept used to uniquely identify and relate physical assets, engineering objects and digital information.
