System Boundary

The defined physical or functional limits that determine the extent of a commissioning, operational or engineering system.

Definition

A System Boundary defines the physical, functional or operational limits of a system or subsystem by identifying the interfaces at which responsibility, testing, commissioning or operational ownership transitions to another system. Clearly defined system boundaries support safe isolation, commissioning planning, progressive turnover and configuration management.

Why It Matters

System Boundaries define the physical and functional limits used to manage commissioning, testing and operational responsibility.

In Practice

System boundaries are commonly established using isolation points, process interfaces, equipment ownership or functional responsibilities to support safe commissioning and phased operational handover.

Common Misuse

A System Boundary defines the limits of an individual commissioning system, whereas Systemization establishes the complete breakdown of the facility into those systems.
